It's entirely consistent with Microsoft's observed behaviour. Look at their
track record with gratuitous file format and protocol changes. Windows
2000's Kerberos and DNS support will be subtly incompatible with standard
Kerberos and DNS, for example...

I don't believe Microsoft's backpedalling one moment.
