Some further investigation revealed that the ThinkPad (claims to) have a
1.2 APM BIOS.  That should of course be back compatible with the 1.1 driver
in FreeBSD, but you never know.  I guess there are lots of IBM extension in
the APM BIOS that they don't want to tell us about....

If I'm feeling brave/desparate I might try your suggestion of downgrading
the BIOS.  Could you let me know if you manage to get anything useful out
of IBM?
