I've got a box at work that was about the same age, and i upgraded it
to -current a few weeks ago.

Upgrading way older systems (> ~ 1 year) from source however is
virtually impossible due to a ton of bootstrap problems.  It's
probably easier to install the binaries from a 3.0 CD then.
