Since your ethernet was already running, it's always a good idea
to set the port down first.
Interestingly, you can should be able to do that in one command as
the code is sequential in operation. I.E.
ifconfig ex0 inet xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx netmaske yyy.yyy.yyy.yyy down up
should have done what you want.
