Hi,
This is quite embarrassing, but I think I'll bring this
thread to an end, in case someone is in similar trouble
and finds this thread in the archives...

Well, the partition that contained the CHROOTDIR was mounted
with -o nodev... Yeah, I'm a complete idiot. Re-mounted it
without that option, and "make release" worked like a charm.
