Which port does this refer to? Which version? What are the versions of
the dependency ports? When were they installed? etc.. etc..

This looks very much like a local configuration issue. All of the GNOME
ports have been built successfully on a regular basis by multiple
people (and Satoshi's package-builder) -- whilst GNOME isn't exactly
the most bug-free piece of software around, it certainly compiles.

As I mentioned in the original mail, the interdependencies of the
various ports that make up GNOME are relatively complex -- I'd hazard
a guess to say that it's probably the most complex set we have under
/usr/ports.

The bsd.port.mk dependency mechanisms could probably do with an
extension such that we can explicitly request particular versions of
dependent ports (eg: needing libtool-1.3.3 or higher etc..) to make
life a little simpler for the build-everything-from-source people.

In this case, however, I would suggest either using the pre-built
packages, or doing a complete reinstall of 3.3-RELEASE, cvsup up to
3.3-STABLE, cvsup a clean new set of ports, and rebuild things
from scratch. (I know that's horribly Microsoft-ish of me, but it's
probably going to be the easiest way to resolve things).
