No. My case was partly just bad luck. I used /usr/src/UPDATING from stable. I think it was missing one minor part. I also re-read it afterwards and found I also did not see one of the points that was documented. The part missing was about a file that had moved in stable. By now I am just going to go with "the sure thing" and re-install from scratch. I have already done this for two other boxes and have been keeping notes so hopefully this third one should be even better.
