Not a biggy, but I thought I'd point it out. It maked the card : configure faster, as well, as DHCP does ot try to deal with the : non-existant xe0 when the card in inserted. You are corerct. The freeze date has passed. dhcp should be using $device which is right in newer versions of -current/-stable.
