I would vote for this, too. As many others I had that
`crackling sound', especially with PCI bus activity.
Switching to emu10k1.c,v 1.13 from -CURRENT helped
a lot.

BTW is emu10k1.c kind of that code Creative hosts
on opensource.creative.com?
