Subject: Problem getting Seagate ST318436LW to work with AIC7xxx driver

I am having trouble getting a new disk drive to work with the AIC7xxx
driver. The new drive is a Seagate SCSI drive, model ST318436LW.

    Environment:
      Mandrake Linux Version 7.0
      Linux 2.2.14-15mdksmp #1 SMP Tue Jan 4 21:36:33 CET 2000 i686 unknown
Motherboard: ASUS P2B-DS with integrated AIC7890 controller
includes optional AIC-3860 transceiver according to web
site where I bought the motherbord

    AIC7xxx driver version from syslog:
     scsi0 : Adaptec AHA274x/284x/294x (EISA/VLB/PCI-Fast SCSI) 5.1.21/3.2.4
            <Adaptec AIC-7890/1 Ultra2 SCSI host adapter>

    Symptoms:

The driver seems to go into an infinite loop displaying messages to
the console at the rate of about every two seconds. I wrote down
what I thought were the important parts of the messages as they were
    scrolling.

    The messages have the form:

        host 0 abort (pid 12) ...
channel 0 reset timed out trying harder
abort command due to timeout scsi 0 channel 0 id 9 lun 0

One of the lines early on in the output contains the string:

        Test Unit Ready 00 00 00 00 00

    for the Seagate drive.

I would normally think that meant the drive was not spun up, but when I
type <Ctrl><A> during startup to enter the SCSI BIOS, I can choose the
"SCSI Disk Utilities" option and from there choose either "Format" or
"Verify" and both run to completion without any indication of error.

What can I do next? What other information can I provide that might
    provide insight to my problem?

    John
