XFree is influenced by Linux too heavily, and we all know that Linux
is only a "Unix-like" OS ;-), so I wouldn't trust their ideas of how
things should be laid out in real Unix (whatever Rev. Don Kool says :).

Hmm, incidentally, prebuild package from ftp.freebsd.org installs

    /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xkb -> ../../../../etc/X11/xkb
and
    /etc/X11/xkb/compiled  -> ../../../../../var/db/xkb

And from the number of ..'s it's clear that symlink for "compiled" was
made not for /etc but for /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xkb. Somehow this gives
me a hint that /etc is not a default location.

Fortunately, hierarchy in /etc is more shallow and /.. points back to
/ so the symlink works (well, sort of, as the symlink is dangling as
installed).
