I'm using devfs on the kernel, and I'll bet it hasn't created ad0s1a at mount time. It works if I specify it ufs:/dev/ad0s1a, but not automatically. I rebuilt another image on s2 instead of s1 and that booted fine. I'll take a look at lsdev tomorrow when I do the next build, but I'm betting that this is what it is.
