Linux does this by setting runlevel 5 (X11) as the default runlevel (in /etc/inittab). Since freebsd doesn't support runlevels, you'll need to find a different way. Probably the best way to do this would be to have your .bashrc (or .login or whatever) file exec a script to launch it. The script should probably look for /tmp/.X0-lock, so it won't try to launch X if it's already running (i.e., when you start a terminal from within X).
