i got freebsd4-stable last year, from cd's a few months old.  i'm sure
there is a working procedure for upgrading a fbsd 4-stable to fbsd
4.3-stable.  someone (could not find the name, sorry) proposed to do the
upgrading in two smaller steps.  this might work as far as i can see.
