What a coincidence; with 4.3-Release I've been trying to get
"lame" (both the ports version and the latest from source) to
read from the sound card and convert to MP3 on-the-fly.
After much fiddling and trying many different options,
the best I can do is get the MP3 file to play back at high speed.

However, I _can_ read from the sound card with "wavrec"
and it stores the WAV file just fine. I can also
take "lame" and convert the WAV file to MP3 just fine,
but I cannot get "lame" to read directly from the
soundcard (/dev/dsp) and convert to MP3 directly.

I've tried with two different soundcards and get
the same result. FYI, this is what to /dev/sndstat says:

FreeBSD Audio Driver (newpcm) Dec 31 1997 18:36:57
 Installed devices:
 pcm0: <CMedia CMI8738> at io 0xac00 irq 5 (1p/1r channels duplex)
 pcm1: <ESS Solo-1E> at io 0xb000,0xb400,0xb800 irq 3 (1p/1r channels)

By the way, this is reading from the "line" (line-in) jack of
the sound card, appropriately set with "mixer" beforehand.

Any ideas? -T.H.
