I can vouch for the fact that even an old dx66 486 works well in this application. I found my "router" lying by the side of the road, abandoned as trash. FreeBSD installed easily and I was up and running in a few hours -- works great. Take a look at the FreeBSD handbook, networking section. It describes how to configure your firewall. Very easy.
