This problem has been major headache for me - the
reason apparently is the driver which is flaky. Sadly
there is no solution bar getting a new NIC that uses a
different driver.

I've been told that if you have a fast system (P200 or
better) then it isn't much of a problem. I don't have
such a machine, so I can't verify this. ;-(
