I'm a former AutoCAD and ARC/INFO programmer (on both UNIX and NT).  I'd
say you're most likely to succeed if...

1. Autodesk or ESRI release their products on Linux (don't hold your breath).
or
2. Autodesk or ESRI release their products on OS/X.  It won't be FreeBSD
but it may actually happen.
