Not to mention, normally Satoshi does these updates in sync with
the latest package set that hits the ftp mirrors.

.. and the repo bloat would be in tens of thousands of lines
after just a few days... and perhaps in the millions of lines
after a year or two.  There's just too many ports to do this.
