i want to thank everybody for their overwhelming replies. i am now
convinced that ethernet is the only reasonable solution w/o having 
one computer on all the time. also, it's cheap & won't require
much tinkering.

now, i am looking for a some dial-up router as suggested in ryan's
reply. is that what they are really called? any particular 
brand/model/manufacturer?
