I'm *not* running NIS, yet when I run passwd, it's trying to connect to a ypbind server. I have to wait about a minute for all this to time out before I can proceed with the passwd change. How does passwd determine if your system is running NIS? Some magic cookie in the password file ? If so, what is it ?
