There are some IEs that can be used to transport some few bytes of data transparently (e.g. DISPLAY), but this remote configuration will need to work over all sorts of PBXes (guess you are installing the box behind your office PBX), some of which might filter specific IEs. There is also the possibility to do it via X.25-over-D, but that again requires that X.25 is transparently supported along the entire signalling path. I guess they just implemented some mechanism using a B channel, push down the new config and load the new config once this connection is terminated. The connection as such will be very short, so you likely won't notice. Just an educated guess, however.
