Because when you were first exposed to Unix in college, your Sun workstation had a pair of diamond meta keys. To be sure, I rarely use software, like Emacs, when it starts to refer to "meta keys." To be sure, my keyboard has meta-keys, they have the Windows logo on them. To be sure, I get confused by documentation that distinguishes between the meta key and the escape key.
