I have no problem doing this, it depends on what rules you have in your
firewall I guess, but that can always be circumvented by telling AIM to
run on whatever ports you have open in your firewall. (eg At work I set it
to run over port 80, this however hampers file-transfers).

Yes, I've done this as well.
