The killer bug turned out to be that efifs_stat() didn't set S_IFREG on normal
files.  A second bug in the $module_path parser had me chasing wild geese
for days and days and turned out to not be fatal at all. :-]  Oh well.

Now 'boot kernel -s' and 'boot kernel.old -s' etc work as expected.
