What would be the effect of > this ? The effect would be unpredictable. When it hangs, it hangs because two threads are trying to get the lock at the same time. Without the locking, it wouldn't hang. But the changes one thread was making to the rtld's data structures might cause the other thread to follow an invalid pointer and crash the whole application. John -- John Polstra John D.
