Ronneil, The fact that it has worked many, many times does not mean that it always will. It is certainly the case that it will, on rare occasion, fail. If it fails badly enough, you get to re-install the system. What fun! The "official" way of updating has been very carefully designed and was discussed to death on this list in the early days of V4. There is good reason that it is done the way it is done and, if you don't understand why it's done that way, it's probably best to find out before you make your live more complex. Similarly, there has been quite a bit of talk of removing the "world" target from Makefile.inc1. It usually works but may be a diaster on occasion and people keep using it because they have always done it with no idea how dangerous it is. R.
