 I updated my alpha to todays -stable to check on your problem and, I'm
 sorry, but I do not see it:
 
 FreeBSD/alpha (monet) (ttyd0)
 
 login: gallatin
 Password:
 <...>
 % tty
 /dev/ttyd0
 
 Monet is an xp1000 with a serial console.  Are you using serial or
 graphics console?
 
 Can you please provide us with a dmesg and your kernel config file?
