That's a function of Xft and the X server. In general, the best suggestion I can make for a case like yours, where you have many non-ports fonts installed, is to build with -DWITHOUT_XFT, which will disable anti-aliasing, but should stop the crashes. -- AlanE (Alan Eldridge), who likes fixing weird distributed systems bugs.
