I replaced the kernel on the boot floppy with one I had built for the occasion (with 'cpu I386_CPU' and 'options GPL_MATH_EMULATE'). As I indicated, my only hangup is that I'm not familiar enough with the new GCC 3 build procedures to know where to put the -march and/or -mcpu flags for a buildworld on a separate (newer) machine.
