Try xfce4. XCFe started life as a CDE clone, but the later versions are quite configurable, and it's more lightweight than Gnome or KDE. Personally I don't much like Gnome on BSD or Gentoo because I've had a lot of bad experiences building and updating it. KDE takes a bit longer to upgrade, but it's usually straightforward.
