In /bin/sh, the backslash is not special in single quotes. Try this (not
tested either):

> + vsystem("echo '# Note that BSD'"'"'s export syntax is
> \"host-centric\" vs. Sun'"'"'s \"FS-centric\" one.' >> /etc/exports");
