Things became even worse with both patches. Now doing normal (not flood) ping 
over  EITHER xl1 OR xl2 (they share IRQ11)  causes the corresponding 
interface to say "watchdog timeout". Essentially, xl1 and xl2 do not work at 
all now.

mptable still reports the same stuff as it was on the original (unpatched) 
kernel
