Not quite as dramatic here, but when, say, the firefox source gets untarred, my machine becomes quite unresponsive, including audio decoding (xmms) stuttering and the mouse cursor jumping around. Haven't seen the likes since the 486 days. This is 5.4-PRERELEASE on a P4 3GHz. Perhaps some badly balanced scheduler stuff? mkb.
