Gnome was upgraded by running the script from console. After completion of the upgrade, I typed "startx" but the screen launched into a scrambled looking screen that appeared to be at 640x480 resolution (where on Gnome-2.10, I was always using 1024x768), which I nothing on the desktop was visible. I had to use CTRL ALT BKSPACE in order to kill X. I rebooted the notebook to see if this would make a difference, but rebooting did not change anything - X (and therefore Gnome-2.12) does not load.
