Have you tried using Xine directly? Personally I don't much like VLC on UNIX, I think its reputation comes from good experiences on Windows. I've never seem VLC do anything that at least one of mplayer or xine wouldn't do better, and it seems to be the least successful of the three in playing obscure formats.
