If you are > using gdm the core will be in /var/gdm. I'm not sure where it might be > otherwise. I use startx. I do not seem to get any core files - I would have mentioned it earlier if I did. If you think it will help I will look into using gdm, which I do not currently have installed, or anything else you think may help.
