If so, > > Probably yes. Hmm. In the meantime I've looked at the source of pwcview, and it seems to be V4L, too (not V4L2). But pwcview _does_ work, unlike Skype. I'm confused now. Is there an easy way to check whether V4L or V4L2 is in use? I'm somewhat reluctant to spend hours or days on implementing an interface, just to find out that the problem is somehwere else.
