There are implications of the update that you're not considering, e.g., PORTREVISION, distinfo, modifications to the patch files, ... I suggest that you take a step back and read the FreeBSD's Porters Handbook [1]. It is very well written and contains a lot of information you cannot do without if you plan to maintain a port.
