... so it isn't visible to the "normal" users.

I would also appreciate a hint in the man page of zpool(8). Like=20
"Be aware: A spare declared vdev is not (yet) automatically replacing a
faulty rendered drive. Human action is still required."

It could save some trouble in prevention.
