I use FileExplorer for this purpose.  There is a free version
and one that costs a couple of bucks, the main difference is the
free one only supports one server connection (which should be
sufficient for the use case at hand).  It can speak SMB and FTP
directly to your FreeBSD host, and can access the photos on the
device if you grant it appropriate perms to do so.

Of course the device still needs to be sufficiently registered
to be able to install apps from the store, which may or may not
help you, Polytropon.
