Yoy!  Is it not possible to set up some sort of watchdog timer instead?

watchdog() /* runs once a second */ {
	if (in_driver) {
		if (was_in_driver)
			panic();
		was_in_driver = 1;
	}
}

naughty_driver_routine() {
	in_driver = 1;
	
	...the routine...
	
	in_driver = was_in_driver = 0;
}
