I've also snarfed the latest version of the handbook from cdrom.com. The datestamp on all the files in the handbook tar file (and on the file itself) is 19 May, which had contributed to my impression that there wasn't much going on with the handbook. Should it not have a more recent date? All the files in ftp://ftp.FreeBSD.ORG/pub/FreeBSD/docs/ apparently have a datestamp of 19 May. This is what Netscape reports: Current directory is /pub/FreeBSD/docs Up to higher level directory FAQ-html.tar.gz 84 Kb Mon May 19 00:26:00 1997 FAQ.ascii 169 Kb Mon May 19 00:26:00 1997 FAQ.latin1 169 Kb Mon May 19 01:07:00 1997 FAQ.ps 287 Kb Mon May 19 00:26:00 1997 README 557 bytes Mon May 19 01:09:00 1997 handbook-html.tar.gz 391 Kb Mon May 19 00:27:00 1997 handbook.ascii 1000 Kb Mon May 19 00:27:00 1997 handbook.latin1 998 Kb Mon May 19 01:07:00 1997 handbook.ln 12 Kb Mon May 19 00:27:00 1997 handbook.ps 1578 Kb Mon May 19 00:28:00 1997 [...] >> set debug chat phase connect lcp ipcp ccp command tun >> # set debug phase carrier chat connect link >> # set debug carrier link phase >> set debug link > ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ >Oops - you've just overridden the previous "set debug". <bangs head against wall> Damn! Hmmm.. that was how I started out, with the route added in ppp.conf and not in sysconfig, but all I got was 'no route to host' errors. After some fiddling, I tried setting the default router in sysconfig, and it worked. I'll try it the way you advise with the new version. Excellent. Thanks for your help. Hopefully my problem will disappear somewhere in the process of installing the new version. >Don't _EVER_ lose your sense of humour....
