Further to my previous question, I have done some digging, and it looks as though despite the fact that DES support has been installed, the passwd file is defaulting to different encryption, as the crypted password field is 32 bytes, where the DES field was 13. Is there a configuration file that I need to tweak somewhere to enable DES support? I noted auth.conf, but the lack of documentation for it is somewhat disturbing, if it has been implemented.
