The message comes from the BIOS loading code in the machine. Several possibilities exist, install a DOS partition which will boot, and then remove it and install your FreeBSD. That should get you your master boot block. I installed on a 13 Gig EIDE, with the "FreeBSD is the only OS ever on this machine" option (my manuals are elsewhere), and it installed and booted just fine, with no previous OS installed. There is probably a program or option to do this. Usually fdisk on the other versions of Intel Unix I have used dd the master boot block out... If you want to get really daring, look at the first sector of the BIOS and see if it starts with a "jump" command, e9 or eb or something like that. :-) If any of this is incorrect for FreeBSD, I hope someone lets me know, and lets me know how it is incorrect.
