I do have K6-233 which is old MMX chip too. 3.3-RELEASE
worked OK. But 4.0-RELEASE works like a charm :) Thus I think
you are missing something :) At least, put your hdd into 
PII-400, install 4.0 and then take it back into P200. 
Don't forget to rebuild the kernel first.
