At first I thought this was a version number problem, but it seems
more confusing than that.
this is from gimp-devel, which failed during a portupgrade:
*** Could not run GTK+ test program, checking why...
*** The test program failed to compile or link. See the file
config.log for the
*** exact error that occured. This usually means GTK+ is
incorrectly installed.
configure: error: Test for GTK failed. See the file 'INSTALL' for
help.
===> Script "configure" failed unexpectedly.
Please report the problem to gnome@FreeBSD.org [maintainer]
and attach
the
"/usr/ports/graphics/gimp-devel/work/gimp-1.3.9/config.log" including
the output of the failure of your make command. Also, it
might be a good
idea to provide an overview of all packages installed on
your system
(e.g. an `ls /var/db/pkg`).
*** Error code 1
So I tried to install gtk20 by itself:
checking for XOpenDisplay in -lX11... no
configure: error: *** libX11 not found. Check 'config.log' for
more details.

(e.g. an `ls /var/db/pkg`).

[/usr/ports/x11-toolkits/gtk20]# locate libX11

/usr/compat/linux/usr/X11R6/lib/libX11.so.6
/usr/compat/linux/usr/X11R6/lib/libX11.so.6.2
I'm trying gtk12 and it seems to have found X11 just fine.
