I thought PC2700 was the max except for the 248 and 246. If the BIOS fails to properly reduce RAM timings based on the CPU stepping then Bad Things might happen. If you have any PC2700 DRAM you might try it. See what this line says in /var/run/dmesg.boot to find out the stepping (which is encoded in the ID - see http://www.amd.com/us-en/assets/content_type/white_papers_and_tech_docs/25759.pdf for information as to what this means).
