Hello, I am in the process of acquiring a hardware platform for hosting a mail server. I am considering a Compaq Proliant ML server. The basic configuration comes with 128Mb SDRAM, PIII 1Ghz processor, Hot Plug drive cage, no RAID, 1 7200 rpm Pluggable Universal Ultra2 SCSI hard drive. Will this be okay to run FreeBSD with a pop3 and smtp server (about 50, 000 e-mails a day)? Do I need RAID? Additional drives? Is there any other server that is generally better suited to FBSD out-of-box? I know I have to check the Hardware Compatibility list, but I need to know if the Compaq is a good pick, and if it is not, any suggestions on which server I can comfortably use. I am a newbie to FreeBSD (and Unix in general). Another thing is I have a budget constraint so I'm looking for something that is not expensive. Any suggestions are very welcome. Kondie.
