It seems that many ASUS boards have problems--mine is with the A7A266 
(though mine was fixed with a hack--Tom, I'm sorry that it didn't work for you)

IN GENERAL--it seems that the problem is with the ASUS boards and 
XFree86-4.x rather than one vid card or another (I've duplicated the 
problems with a few different cards)
